Name: Eden Peters
Date: Thursday March 23, 2017
Grade: 1/2 Split Class
Unit/Subject: Making Inferences (Reading) - Literacy
Materials
The book ‘Fly Away Home’ by Eve Bunting
Graphic organizers
Objectives
To ensure the students fully understand how to make an inference and are able to include all of the elements (the prediction, what the text/pictures told them, what they already know)
Anticipatory Set
All of the students will sit on the carpet and I will read the book to them.
Instructional Input
Before we begin reading the story, we will review the concept of making an inference.
Guided Practice
As a class, we will discuss what we infer the story will be about – based on the title and the picture.
Checking for Understanding
To further ensure their understanding, I will stop about half way through the book and ask them to do a ‘think, pair, share’ where they will think about what they infer is going to happen next, discuss it with a partner and then share it with the rest of the class.
Once the story is finished, I will ask them ‘if there was another page, what do you infer would happen next?’ – they will take their graphic organizers and fill them out independently and hand them in.
Closure
When they are finished, the students will go back to the carpet and get ready for their science lesson.
Reflection
While I feel the students understood the lesson and grasped the concept, I feel that the book was slightly too complex for this age group. The classroom teacher was away today and she asked me to prepare a lesson using this book, however if I were to do this activity again in the future, I would probably use a different piece of text.
