Name: Eden Peters
Date: Friday February 24, 2017
Placement: Thornhill Public School
Purpose
The purpose of this task was to assist the children with any unanswered questions they had regarding the current math unit they are learning.
Label: Math Support
What are your objectives
To ensure the children’s understanding of addition and subtraction in order to best prepare them for their “show what you know” quiz.
To increase my ability to assist the children with math concepts.
To foster a comfortable environment where the children feel confident in their abilities.
Describe the experience
For the past few weeks, the children have been learning about adding and subtracting. The grade ones have been working with all numbers between 0 – 20, and the grade twos have been using all numbers from 0 – 99.
Prior to my assistance, the classroom teacher presented a lesson on adding and subtracting using ‘friendly numbers’ (5,10,15...).
Once the grade 1’s were given their assignments, I went to the back table and sat with Child D, Child E and Child A, as it seemed they were the ones who required the most assistance. Using friendly numbers and counters, the 3 children and myself worked through their worksheets together.
Reflection
While the children that I worked with are very smart and capable children, I feel that they better understood the concepts of addition and subtraction with my assistance. Once we finished the front side of the worksheet together, the children worked independently at the back table while I was there to help with the questions that they did not understand. These children responded really well to the scaffolding method that I used while working with them.
