Grade: 1/2 Split Class
Unit/Subject: Literacy – Making Predictions
Materials
Scaredies Away – a book by Barry McDonagh and Stacy Fiorile
Graphic Organizer (for the students)
Objectives
To expand the children’s understanding on Making Predictions
To review the concept of Making Predictions and answer any questions that the children may have regarding the topic
Anticipatory Set
I will review the elements of making a strong prediction and then I will show the children the book that we will be reading.
Instructional Input
Before the lesson, we will review the elements of making predictions and answer any questions that the students may have regarding this concept.
Guided Practice
Overall, there will be three predictions throughout this story. The first will be based on the title and the cover page (we will do a think, pair, share for this). The second prediction will be in the middle of the story (again, we will do a think, pair, share). The last prediction will be on the second last page of the story – this prediction is the one that they will do on their own so I will be able to check for their understanding.
Modeling
Before reading the story and having the children make their own predictions, I will review the elements of making predictions (I think... I think this because... I know that...) and go over the last example the class did together. Moreover, we will do the first two predictions together.
Checking for Understanding
On the organizer, the children will write their predictions for a certain spot in the book. Once they are finished, they will hand them in and receive feedback.
Questioning Strategies
Some questions that I may ask the children are:
What do you think is going to happen next?
Why do you think this?
Has this ever happened to you?
How do you know this?
Closure
To end my activity, the children will write down their predictions and hand it in to the teacher. Once everyone has handed in their papers, they will either have snack or go on to do another lesson with the teacher.
Independent Practice
The children will be able to practice this on their on their own while they read books (either in class or at home) as they can read a page and guess what is going to happen next.
Reflection
Overall, this activity went really well. The children were engaged in the story and interested in the lesson that the story provided. While some children did not completely grasp the entire concept of making predictions, majority of them were able to write a complete prediction using I think that, I think this because, and I know.
