Name: Eden Peters
Date: Wednesday February 22, 2017
Placement: Thornhill Public School
Purpose
I completed this task because the classroom teacher needed to work with the grade 1 students, therefore I was asked to complete the science experiment with the grade 2s.
Task
In response to completing this science experiment, I hope to plan a science lesson with the children where they close their eyes and touch different objects and then they will describe how they feel. I will have them close their eyes rather than having them open because I feel that their sense of touch will be increased and they will be able to focus more on what they are touching.
Label
Science experiment with the grade 2’s – touching and describing solids
What are your objectives
To enhance the children’s understanding of solids (what they are, what they can be made of)
To expand their descriptive vocabulary by discussing what the solids feel and look like.
Materials:
Rock
Sand
Salt
Sugar
Spoon
Step by Step
As I took out each item, I chose one child to touch it. While they were touching the item, they described what it looks like, feels like, and what it is made of. Each child would have a turn to give their input, and as a group they would agree on a descriptive word for the item.
When we were finished with one object, we would move onto the next until we were finished exploring all of the items.
Reflection
I feel that this activity went really well. All of the children had a chance to look at and feel all of the objects and they used different describing words as well. I feel that they all enjoyed doing this experiment rather than doing a traditional lesson and during the activity, they seemed to be more engaged and focused on the task at hand. If I were to do another experiment with this group of children, I would have them close their eyes (as mentioned above) and have them guess what the object is.
