Name: Eden Peters

Date: Tuesday February 21, 2017

Placement: Thornhill Public School

Purpose

To assist the grade 1’s in completing their science work – following a lesson on Sources of Energy

What are your objectives

  • Aiding the children in answering the questions regarding ‘Sources of Energy’

  • Ensuring the children’s understanding of the lesson

  • Answering questions that the children have regarding the lesson

Describe the experience

Following the science lesson, the children went back to their desks to complete the work that they were given. The lesson was based on Sources of Energy, specifically focusing on Sun, Wind, Electricity and Muscle/Food. The children were required to match the object to the energy source that it needs to work (for example, a hair dryer needs electricity).

While the children were completing their work, it seemed that Child D, Child E, and Child A were struggling to answer the questions, so I told them to come sit at the back table where we could complete the questions together. I felt that this was the right thing to do as they would not have been able to fill out the sheet to the best of their abilities if the did not understand the concepts.

Through working together, the three children were able to finish their work in a timely manner, while understanding the lesson completely.

Reflection

Overall, I feel that my actions were successful and this lesson went well. While the classroom teacher was giving her lesson to the grade 2’s, I was helping the grade 1’s, which worked well since the children redirected their questions to me rather than interrupting the other lesson. Furthermore, due to the fact that by the end of the period, the children that I was working with seemed to understand the concept of the Sources of Energy, I feel that my instruction and support were both useful and appreciated. In the future, when working with the children on a science lesson, it may be more helpful to provide them with alternative examples to further their understanding of the idea.
