Name: Eden Peters

Date: Friday February 10, 2017

Placement: Thornhill Public School

Purpose

Today the school had a Read-a-thon to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. It took place in the gym and all of the classes in the school were involved.

Label your task: I read with some of the children, especially the ones who needed more assistance reading or staying focused.

What are your objectives

  • To ensure the children stay on task, especially in an environment where the whole school is there and when they are doing this for a good cause.

  • To assist the children that require more help in reading and staying on task.

Describe the experience (materials, step by step)

The materials used in this program were books that the children brought from home as well as books from the homeroom class.

After attendance this morning, we went down to the gym and found an area for the class to sit. Once all of the children were sitting and had a book, the read-a-thon began. Throughout the hour and a half time period that our class was at the read-a-thon, I went around to some of the children to hear them read and even read to some of them. At 10:00 am we went back up to the classroom and the children had their snacks.

Reflection

I think that this initiative was really good and it showed the children how to think about something bigger than themselves. Closer to the end of the read-a-thon, some of the children seemed to be feeling ‘antsy’, so I sat with a group of them and read to them while discussing what we thought was going to happen and talking about the pictures. Most of the children did not understand what exactly they were raising money for, so I feel that in the future, if there is another fundraising event held, that it should either be explained to the children or it should be for a cause that the students can relate to.
