Name: Eden Peters

Date: Thursday February 9, 2017

Grade: 1/2 Split Class

Unit/Subject: Personal Narratives Continued (Literacy) - working 3:1 with the ELL students

Materials

  • Chart paper with my personal narrative on it

  • Paper for the children

  • Markers

  • Pencils

Objectives

  • To ensure the children’s understanding of the components of a personal narrative.

  • To enhance the children’s knowledge of how to write a personal narrative.

  • To introduce the concept of feelings and how to include them in a personal narrative.

Anticipatory Set

We will review the personal narrative that we worked on last week (‘My Trip to the Zoo’) and discuss what components are in a personal narrative (5 W’s) - this is what they know so far.

Instructional Input

What knowledge will you communicate to the children so that they understand the objective of the lesson

  • We will read the fictional narrative about going to the pet store

  • Together, we will summarize what happened in the story

Guided Practice

What activities will the students perform under your supervision to ensure that they are able to practice the concept taught? How will you support students when errors are made?

  • Taking turns, the children will establish the 5W’s

  • I will ask them to list some feeling words

  • Once some feeling words have been established, I will ask them to find the feeling words that are in the story

Modeling

How will you demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will also be able to do it?

  • We will go through my story together and then they will create their own. My story will act as the model for the students.

Checking for Understanding

How will you check that the students have understood/learned the objectives?

  • While the students are creating their own personal narratives I will read what they have written and ask them questions to ensure they are on the right track.

Questioning Strategies

What types of questions might you ask to probe for higher thinking level?

  • Why did you feel this way?

  • What other details could you add? (Adjectives?)

Closure

  • Once they have created their stories, I will ask them to read each others and determine the 5 W’s and the feeling words

  • If there is time, I will introduce transition words

Independent Practice

Similar to the last personal narrative lesson, I will tell the children to think over the weekend about what they are doing and what they will be able to write about in their next personal narrative.

Reflection

Overall I feel that this activity went well. The children understood the concept of adding feelings into their story, however they did not add the reasoning behind their feelings. In their stories, they would write that they felt happy, excited or sad, but they left out the causes of their feelings. The next time we do a personal narrative activity, I think we should create a personal narrative all together and then if there is time they can create one on their own. The past two activities I have prepared a model for them and they may not fully understand all of the elements that need to be included in a personal narrative. I feel that if we create one together, they will all be able to have input and be a part of the story rather than answering questions and then doing their own independently.
