M.S READ-A-THON

This week the teachers and students will be participating in the MS Read-a-thon, where they will be silently reading in the school’s gym after raising money for Multiple Sclerosis research. For the past few weeks, the children have been bringing in books that they intend to read, as well as collecting funds from their family and friends in their neighbourhoods. While Multiple Sclerosis and reading are do not necessarily have a relation, this initiative promotes healthy habits for children as well as raising money for a relevant cause.

Upon researching this event, I came across the Parents Page, where I found information regarding the benefits that participating in the MS Read-a-thon provides. First is the benefit for the parent and child to bond. Prior to the event, the child should practice their reading skills at home, which offers the parents another opportunity to bond with their child(ren). Next was the benefit of enhancing the child’s speech and language skills. Through practicing and participating in the event, the child will develop and increase their cognitive as well as their expressive and receptive language skills. Additionally, while the child is reading, they will be improving their attention, as they will be required to focus on the book that they have chosen. I feel that all of the benefits explored are important for the parent and the child, and hopefully through this event the children are able to gain insight on the cause in which they are raising money for.

I am really excited to be able to participate in this event and I hope that the children are able to gain something from engaging in it as well.
