Purpose:
There are two children at my placement who are leaving to go home this weekend. My supervisor asked me to do an art activity with them so that they are able to take a tangible item with them as a memory of their stay here.
Tomorrow is the first day of October, so my supervisor and I decided to create a fall themed art activity. Using some of the craft materials on the cart, we chose to make pumpkins.
Activity:
The materials that we decided to use for our pumpkins were:
Paper plates,
Orange paint,
Paintbrushes,
Liquid glue,
Green construction paper, and
Spanish moss
With the orange paint and a paintbrush, and using a hand over hand technique, we painted the paper plates orange. Once the plates were covered, we glued a piece of green construction paper to the back of the plate (to look like a stem). We then put some liquid glue on the bottom of the plates and covered it up with some Spanish moss.
Evaluation:
I feel that this activity went well and the children will be able to have a nice piece of artwork to take home with them.
The hand over hand technique worked well with Child E, as her motor abilities are very limited. However, it did not work as well with Child A, as she is more independent and wanted to create the pumpkin on her own.
This is a craft that I would do again with different children as it can be easily modified to meet the individual needs of each child.
