Purpose:
Yesterday when I was playing with Child R, I planned an activity where she would throw a larger ball (about the size of a beach ball) through a hula-hoop. Today, I decided to modify that activity to further engage her motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Child R seemed to enjoy the ‘Hula-Hoop Ball Throw’ activity, so I chose to gather balls of different sizes (as I mentioned in yesterdays evaluation) and find a smaller target hole for her to throw them in.
Activity:
I found a basket in the shape of a basketball net and decided to use that as the target hole for this activity. Additionally, I was able to find balls of different sizes and colours. I felt that using different coloured balls would also assist in maintaining the focus of Child R.
While Child R and I were playing this game, there was another volunteer available so we decided to modify it to play with three people. I would pass a ball to Child R, she would throw it, and the other volunteer would catch it.
Evaluation:
I feel that this activity went well. We were able to play three rounds before Child R was ready to eat her dinner. The activity worked well with both two and three participants, and Child R stayed engaged the entire time.
I am happy that I decided to use the different coloured balls, as I was able to see the expression on Child R’s face each time the green ball was to be thrown. Child R’s communication skills are limited to few words, so I was able to infer that her favourite colour is green and then use the green ball most often to ensure her interests were shown.
This is definitely an activity that I would play again with Child R.
